Consulting Opportunities & Case Studies

As an independent consultant, I have significant experience in conducting complex and varied research-driven consulting projects, for clients ranging from boutique and mid-sized consultancies to specialist security publishers and development agencies.

Topically, these projects have covered everything from political and country risk and corporate due diligence to intelligence research, content strategy and editing. I am happy to hear from prospective clients for projects such as these, with a focus primarily (but not exclusively) on the Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean.

In over two decades of work in the field, I have developed an extensive network of expert contacts representing a broad range of countries and professional backgrounds. Potential clients are encouraged to browse the following section of sample case studies from my professional consulting experience to understand better how I can help solve complex consulting challenges.

Case Study 1- Intelligence Research

The client, a security publisher of global renown, requested a timely and detailed assessment of the national security apparatus of an important regional country. Beyond a simple historic and structural overview, my insights were required on the likely courses of action this security apparatus might take in future, owing to changes in the legislative environment and the general flow of events internationally.

The Challenge

Given an unusually tight deadline, I was faced with the task of producing an intelligence report drawing on a combination of open-source information and interviews with security-sector experts. This required establishing new and old linkages with informed sources. The ultimate challenge was to present the information in a concise and readable manner, establishing the key points and relative degrees of probability for action from the security apparatus in question, based on my understanding of their operation within the historic and current contexts.

My Research

My research utilized sources in several languages and involved exhaustive online research of official websites, secondary sources, and finally interviews with informed persons in the seucrity field. All in all, the final product expanionally.ded the client’s knowledge of the security apparatus under scrutiny and gave them a realistic orientation towards predicting its likely course of future action reg

Results Obtained

The client was very happy with the deliverables, noting the greater depth of fact-based insights that was introduced with my work.

Case Study 2- Corporate Investigations

The Mergers and Acquisitions arm of a well-known international bank was interested in snapping up a relatively successful regional bank, but had some reservations about the management, structure and some key personnel of the latter. The large bank contracted a mid-sized European consultancy, which in turn tasked me with providing a thorough investigation of said entity.

The Challenge

While open sources offered plentiful information on the entity in general, several details were either fuzzy or missing from the picture, including the relationship between the entity and trans-regional companies and its directors. The challenge was thus to find new sources of information which required me to conduct extensive interviews with informed sources, while also doing deep web research on the entity.

My Research

My research turned up several previously unknown linkages between the entity and other companies not previously associated with it, while also casting new light on  the roles played by prominent individuals in the entity’s leadership- not only with it, but in prior external positions that indicated potential conflicts of interest in future.

Results Obtained

Incorporating my field research, the contractor was able to provide authoritative and accurate advisory to the client, allowing the latter to make the right decision by not acquiring the entity.

Case Study 3- Due Diligence

A Western boutique consultancy tasked me with the job of checking the bona fides of a supposed investor from abroad, purporting to have influence in the regional mining sector. The individual in question had made pledges to various would-be investors of being able to make introductions to top governmental officials in a regional country, and thereby enable them to penetrate the market.

The Challenge

Facing not only a strict deadline and the need for maximal discretion, I was challenged further by the need to quickly acquire actionable intelligence on a remote target with claimed local ties. This required creative problem-solving, extensive interviews and ground-level archival research in state ministries relevant to the subject matter.

My Research

After gaining a more precise view of the character and known associations of the target through interviews with informed individuals, I proceeded to cross-check registry lists in dim offices only to discover that several claims made by the target were unsubstantiated. This allowed for the development of an intelligence collection plan eventually led to the assessment that the target individual was not in fact capable of delivering on his promises to would-be investors.

Results Obtained

The contracting client was able to incorporate my research wholesale into its report for the client, and issue direct fact-based advisory indicating a clear course of action, steering would-be investors away from the misleading mining opportunity presented by the target of the investigation.

Case Study 4- Content Strategyy

The client, a major Western development agency, requested my participation in content strategy development for the inaugural verion of a regional state’s national tourism web portal. This included not only structure but also content at a time when the internet was relatively young and there was little content otherwise available.

The Challenge

The project implementation’s main challenge lay in the need to devise a strategy for a structure that would endure, with evergreen content to match, while strategically plesenting the content in a way that would represent the country’s top offerings in the most logical way. There was also a strict budget and timeline to be respected in executing the task.

My Research

I compared several structures that seemed to work well at the time for other national tourism web portals, and also undertook deep research on all of the places, traditions and other content issues that were absoltely necessary to be included, eventually settling on a complete version that would keep the portal operators in good standing for years to come.

Results Obtained

The final product more than satisfied all required parameters by providing an engaging and visually stimulating web portal that included all of the country’s vital tourism offerings, and presented them in a manner that was easy to access and written in high-quality native-speaker English. This version of the website would go on to form the backbone of the national portal, pviding a solid foundation upon which the site operators could establish further content and development as needed, well into the future.
