Lonely Planet Best in Travel 2014

For the ninth year running, the world’s best destinations for the year ahead have been carefully assembled for travellers and virtual visitors by the world leader in travel publishing, Lonely Planet.

Lonely Planet Best in Travel 2014- Chris DelisoThe top countries for 2014 are led off (of course!) by World Cup host Brazil, and include eternal favorites like Scotland and Sweden, as well as some countries that are not actually countries (Antarctica?). The Greek islands made the list as the best-value destination, while Paris tops the list of cities.

For this edition, Chris Deliso wrote the text for a two-page spread covering another country listed within the world top ten- the Republic of Macedonia.

The expected completion of the Skopje 2014 urban infrastructure project, an increasingly traveler-friendly environment and lots of unexpected attractions helped Macedonia make the list.

Chris also snapped the shot of summer action on remarkable Lake Dojran which accompanies the text.

“Beyond work-in-progress Skopje and the more established tourist sites such as Lake Ohrid, Mavrovo ski area and ancient Stobi, things are happening elsewhere. Quiet Berovo, on the eastern border with Bulgaria, is an up-and-coming contender on the spa hotel scene. Also here in Macedonia’s idyllic eastern half, sturdy old Kratovo – connected by Ottoman-era stone bridges and cobblestone lanes – is revitalizing previously derelict Turkish mansions, attesting the bygone wealth of this old mining town.”
